Helen L’Orange AM

Waverton, New South Wales

Community developer

Ageing well and safely and in our own homes is what most Australians want. Helen is founding president of the Waverton Hub, which operates as a mutual, or member-to-member, organisation that helps older Australians enjoy life and stay in their own homes for as long as possible. Paying a $66 annual fee, contributing Hub members job share, organise up to 20 weekly activities and link some 300 members to local services. The sense of belonging helps many overcome social isolation. Members look out for each other with an ‘ask a member first’ policy for small tasks. Helen’s goal is to help other communities to start Hubs. “It would be great for more of us to age well in our own neighbourhoods.”
