Michael Milford

Gaythorne, Queensland

Maths fan, roboticist, educator

Michael is an Associate Professor of Robotics, an Australian Research Council Future Fellow, Microsoft Faculty Fellow and Chief Investigator at the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision. After many years of writing about and teaching maths, he realised that his efforts were still not having an impact on those who most needed it – disengaged students. This led him to found Maths Thrills, a program that uses popular entertainment, including young adult novels, movies and games, to make mathematics a fun, daily part of everyone’s lives. Michael is using his grant to share Maths Thrills throughout Australia and beyond. “One of the greatest joys in life is bringing that light of understanding to someone’s face where before there was none.”
