Michele Lee

Coburg, Melbourne

Playwright, diversity champion

Michele is an Asian Australian playwright who grew up in a “very white” Canberra. Today she works across stage and audio, focusing on stories about race, female identity and otherness. Writing professionally since 2008, Michele has been commissioned by the Malthouse Theatre, Griffin Theatre, Sydney Theatre Company and Radio National, and has won several accolades, including the 2016–17 Queensland Premier’s Drama Award for her play Rice. Michele is working on a play called Security about four female security guards. The play will explore how women can be made complicit in violence against women. “As a second-generation Asian woman, the daughter of migrants with mixed-race nieces and nephews, I want to see our contemporary stories reflect the complexity in diversity.”
