In 2015, this vet founded the world's first certified B-Corporation veterinary practice on the Bellarine Peninsula. Cherished Pets helps people who would otherwise find it difficult to access healthcare for their pets – including the elderly and people experiencing homelessness, domestic violence and their own health challenges. Subsidised by a community of paying clients and donors, the service aims to give people and their animal companions the care they need to stay together. Cherished Pets employs veterinary social workers who take the time to understand a pet owner's story and social and health issues. They work with community service providers to ensure both the person and their pet are well supported. Alicia plans to integrate this innovative model across health and veterinary sectors nationally to improve the health of people, their pets and the community.
