Marrickville, New South Wales

Live performance promoter

As a musician, Alison struggled to find an appropriate space to perform in. This experience motivated her to turn an old newsagency in Sydney’s inner west into a small “artist and community-focused live venue”. She created a comfortable, accessible and welcoming space for artists to perform in, no matter what age or stage they are at in their career. Since 2011, The Newsagency has hosted many of Australia’s finest independent musicians. Alison used her 2016 AMP Tomorrow Fund grant to expand The Newsagency, relocating it to larger premises on Pyrmont Bridge Road, Annandale.

“Most venues put a lot of pressure on emerging musicians to attract hundreds of people. This isn’t always possible, especially when you are a musician just starting out.”
