Charlotte Smith

Leura, New South Wales

Fashion anthropologist, curator

Charlotte grew up surrounded by “wonderful, strong women who believed fashion was more than just pretty clothes”, they also had the ability to transform and empower. In 2004, fashion turned into a career and passion for Charlotte when she inherited the extensive fashion collection of her American godmother, Doris Darnell. Charlotte now uses The Darnell Collection to bring to life fashion’s fascinating, exciting and innovative history. She also shares pieces with non-profit organisations hosting fundraising events and generously gives her time to mentor fashion students. Charlotte is using her grant to help maintain the collection. “I want The Darnell Collection to be recognised as the most accessible collection of fashion history in the world with its home here in Australia.”
