Social innovator, engineer

Darren was shocked to read that, if we fail to act, by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. With his daughter’s future in mind, the former WA Young Australian of the Year decided to research the subject. He was shocked to discover that most plastic items placed in recycling bins are rarely reprocessed in Australia. Darren is responding by setting up Western Australia’s first facility for the reprocessing of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) – commonly used in water bottles. With the University of Western Australia providing the site and a network of schools and students committed to collecting bottles, the sustainable project is coming to life.
