Science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) are pillars on which many future careers will rest. However, children who are blind or vision impaired still face challenges accessing STEM teaching materials – especially those relating to computer coding. As the mother of a child who is vision impaired, Elaine is determined to address this. She is developing an app-based program that will teach vision impaired children computer coding in an accessible and inclusive way. Each lesson introduces a coding concept with the aim of creating a tactile 3D-printed object that can be used to play a board game. “I want to provide an opportunity for vision-impaired children to learn this increasingly fundamental skill for living and working in this digital age.”
