Singer, social historian
Jessie started the Mission Songs project in 2015 to revive songs from Aboriginal missions, settlements and reserves of the 20th century. Blending English language song styles with Aboriginal song traditions, they are a reminder that the world’s oldest living culture is continually evolving. Jessie travelled across the land to interview those who remember the mission songs – including her own grandmother. Ten songs featured in Jessie’s Songs Back Home album, which has also been shared through YouTube videos. Jessie is now writing a book to document this important part of our history. Her aim to for at least one Mission Song to take its place in the national songbook, alongside Waltzing Matilda.
