Cancer researcher, surgical registrar
This Hunter Medical Research Institute PhD candidate has a strong personal motivation to develop a blood test for colorectal cancer. Having lost two young friends to the disease, he is working on a test to pick up early indications of bowel cancer and minimise recurrence. With potential to be a less off-putting and more effective alternative to current screening tests, Joel believes his blood test could also reduce the number of time-consuming and often cost-prohibitive colonoscopies performed. Joel has made strong progress but needs to complete bio-marker analysis in order to move ahead and make a significant difference to survival outcomes.
