Katie Kelly

Macquarie, Australian Capital Territory

Paralympic gold-medallist, triathlete

Katie was born with Usher syndrome, a rare degenerative condition that affects both sight and hearing. Early in 2015, just before her 40th birthday, the then “weekend warrior” triathlete was declared legally blind. Amazingly, the day after her ophthalmologist delivered the news, Katie signed up for her first paratriathlon. In 2016, with Sydney Olympics silver medallist Michellie Jones at her side, Katie won gold for Australia in the first-ever Paralympic triathlon: “By representing Australia at the Rio Paralympics I hope I have inspired others to achieve their goals, whether in sports or their daily lives.”
