Scientist, melanoma researcher

Melanoma accounts for one in 10 cancers in Australia. If detected early, the survival rate is high – however, once it spreads it can be difficult to treat. This medical researcher has spent the past decade uncovering the genetic causes of how and why melanoma occurs. Using this skill set, his research now focuses on identifying the genes responsible for drug-resistance. Once the genes that cause cancer cells to become drug-resistant are identified, oncologists will be better placed to prevent, delay or reverse the process in order to boost survival rates for patients.
