Lakeisha ‘Lucky’ Patterson

Caboolture, Queensland

Paralympic gold-medallist, swimmer

When she small, it was thought Lakeisha would have great difficulty walking. Today, despite having cerebral palsy, epilepsy and early onset Parkinson’s disease, the 17-year-old known as ‘Lucky’ is not only walking but also swimming at an elite level. Determined to make it to the Rio Paralympics, Lucky put in long hours travelling and training in pursuit of her dream. Her hard work paid off in September 2016, when Lucky won two gold medals, three silvers and a bronze in Rio. “Swimming has saved my life. By displaying my commitment, I hope others will be inspired to make healthy changes to their own lives.”
