Mat Bowtell

Victoria
Engineer, humanitarian

This industrial engineer founded Free 3D Hands, a charity that designs and 3D prints hands and assistive devices and are provided free of charge to children and adults in Australia and around the world. More interested in “manufacturing joy” than making money, Mat freely shares his designs under open-source licences to encourage further innovation and empower others to make and repair their own devices. As part of his mission to significantly bring down the cost of assistive technology for those who cannot access or afford it, Mat is developing a low-cost bionic arm. His grant will help him build a world-class design centre.
