Paul Pritchard

South Hobart, Tasmania

Writer, climber, student of nature

A professional climber, Paul acquired a brain injury in 1998 when a boulder struck his head while scaling southern Tasmania’s Totem Pole rock column. The accident resulted in one-sided paralysis, post-traumatic epilepsy and a year in hospital. It also inspired The Totem Pole, a non-fiction account of his experiences that was translated into four languages and deepened his love of writing. Paul went on to study English Literature at the University of Tasmania and, after eight years, graduated in early 2015. He is using his grant to publish a book on what nature can teach us: “The natural world is a great big classroom really. Wild places can teach one resilience, patience, determination, acceptance, how to cope with loss, trust, grace and perspective.”
