Rhiannon Mitchell

New South Wales
Marine science student, role model

Growing up in Bellingen, Rhiannon loved being in the natural world - particular the river. As a teenager, connecting with the culture of her Mununjali people of Beaudesert helped her build confidence. Now studying at the National Marine Science Centre on Gumbaynggirr Country (Coffs Harbour), Rhiannon is encouraging other young Indigenous women to care for themselves and the environment through Saltwater Sistas. This business with purpose offers workshops on culture and marine ecology, while also providing ocean-based activities such as snorkelling and beach clean-ups, and opportunities to learn from Elders and other mentors. On top of this, the keen scuba diver and photographer promotes ocean conservation on her social media channels and through opportunities stemming from her 2021 ABC Heywire Trailblazers win. This grant will help her to grow the business and connect more young women to country and community.
