Publisher, literary activist
Frustrated by the local publishing industry’s lack of investment in provocative and experimental Australian writers, Sam decided to create the change he wanted to see. He established Brow Books in 2016, which is an innovative non-profit that provides opportunities for emerging authors from diverse walks of life. Sam is committed to Brow Books while also teaching writing and writing himself. His dedication is slowly paying off: two of the six titles shortlisted in the 2018 Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction were from Brow Books, and one – The Town – was picked up by UK publishing giant Faber & Faber. With Tomorrow Fund support Sam hopes to publish four books annually, investing the profits back into championing new talent.
