Working in the emergency department led Sarah to question the effectiveness of the patient discharge instructions. If a patient doesn’t understand or can’t recall what the doctor tells them, they can be at a higher risk of something going wrong at home. Sarah’s solution is What the Doctor Said, online software that helps doctors communicate with patients at what is often a stressful time. Being piloted in Perth over two years, these personalised instructions are sent to a patient’s mobile to provide guidance on diagnosis, medication, possible side-effects and when to see a GP. The instructions are in plain English and incorporate pictograms to assist people with low health literacy. Sarah is working towards offering discharge instructions in multiple languages.
