Documentary futures researcher

Equally fascinated and inspired by Melburnians of South Sudanese origin, Shannon believes Australians can learn a lot from this resilient community. In 2010, she directed Miss South Sudan Australia, a TV documentary about a beauty pageant held annually in Melbourne. Since the film was released, South Sudan has slid backwards, which has prompted Shannon to revisit the local community. She is using her grant to help make The Long Road Home, a film that explores alternative futures of the nation through the eyes of a group of South Sudanese Australians: “In my experience, South Sudanese Australians are incredibly optimistic. I don’t want to make a film about a failed state, but rather explore what the community’s dreams are for the future.”
