A Gamilaroi woman, Sorrell's connection to country and family extends along the banks of the Namoi River in Walgett and the Murrumbidgee. Her desire to shape a new normal comes from a lived experience of economic exclusion, racism and discrimination. She has dedicated her career to improving the lives of First Nations people, working across remote NT communities, in policy and advocacy roles and in the corporate sector. Sorrell is the founder of Guumali, a social change agency enabling First Nations communities to rebuild independent economies and uncover local solutions on their terms. In 2022, Sorrell will launch a new Guumali initiative - The Shed. This space will enable changemakers and entrepreneurs to access the tools and support needed to unlock ideas and dreams, while harnessing partnerships to break down barriers for start-ups and innovative thinkers.
