The number of shark attack victims has increased steadily over the past decades, due to more people spending longer times in the water and a recovering shark population. To help protect surfers, Thomas and his Aqua Armour co-founders are working to create the world's safest wetsuit. With expertise in material science, human anatomy, kinesiology and shark behaviour, the team is focused on protecting parts of the body where shark bites are both likely and fatal. This approach results in wetsuits that combine industry-leading protection with comfort and performance. The hope is that these wetsuits will not only save lives, but also reduce the need for drastic shark control measures. Thomas is using his grant to create a third-generation prototype, as well as bring Aqua Armour jobs to Newcastle.
